    Classic M&M Cookies

Published: Sep 20, 2024 by Margo · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

These classic M&M Cookies have a traditional soft and chewy texture. The cookies are packed with M&M candies, making for a mouthful of chocolate in each bite.

    Classic M&M Cookies

There's never a wrong time to make a classic M&M Cookie. The traditional cookies always hit the spot, no matter the occasion. There is something so nostalgic about the cookies that makes them the perfect treat no matter how old you are.

M&M cookies are cousins to chocolate chip cookies. The dough is very similar, but swapping M&Ms for chocolate chips transforms the cookie entirely. The crunchy chocolate shells add another layer of texture to the M&M cookies.

My favorite thing about these cookies is how well they freeze. I like to keep a batch in the freezer, throw the cookies in with a packed lunch, or take one out when craving something sweet. They defrost quickly, making them perfect to bring along when you need a sweet treat.

Why You'll Love These Classic M&M Cookies

    • Texture - The cookies are slightly soft and have a good crunch from the M&M candies.
    • Fan Favorite - A classic cookie never goes out of style.
    • Freezer Friendly - The cookies will last 2-3 months in the freezer when stored correctly.

Ingredients Needed To Make M&M Cookies

Ingredients Needed To Make M&M Cookies.

See below for all the details on what you'll need to make the full recipe.

    • M&M Candies - I like to use regular-sized M&Ms
    • Cornstarch - Adds to the chewiness of the cookies.
    • Brown Sugar - Keeps the cookies nice and moist.
    • Butter - Let the butter soften to room temperature.

Directions For How To Make M&M Cookies

    1. Prepare.

Preheat the oven to 350 and prepare a cookie sheet with parchment. Set to the side.

    2. Mix the dry ingredients.

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and cornstarch. Set to the side.

    3. Cream the butter.

Using a stand mixer, cream the butter until light and fluffy. Then add in the sugars, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add in the vanilla and the eggs.

    4. Make the batter.

Add in the dry ingredients, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Then, use a rubber spatula to fold in the M&Ms.

    5. Form the cookies

Use a cookie scoop to form the cookie dough into one tablespoon-sized balls.

    6. Bake the cookies.

Place the cookie dough balls on the prepared parchment sheet and bake the cookies for 8-12 minutes. About halfway through, give the pan a slight tap to help the cookies flatten.

    7. Cool and enjoy.

Let the cookies cool slightly on the cookie sheet before moving them to a cooling rack.

    Serving Suggestions

These traditional cookies are great for any occasion. Serve them with lunch, as an afterschool snack, or as a quick and simple dessert. Take the cookies to the next level by turning them into an ice cream sandwich. Most ice cream flavors will pair well with the cookies.

    Make Ahead and Storage

These cookies can easily be made ahead of time. Make the cookies and store them in an airtight container for 2-3 days before serving. Any extra cookies can be stored the same way.

The cookies are also very freezer-friendly. They can be kept in the freezer in an airtight bag or container for 2-3 months. They can also be frozen in cookie dough balls before they are cooked. When ready to cook, place the cookies directly in the oven. Because they are frozen, they will need more time to cook.

    Tips and Variations

    • Seasonal Treats - M&Ms are a great way to celebrate certain holidays. Turn these cookies into Valentine's Day or Christmas celebration treats with these recipes.
    • Mini M&Ms - If you want even more M&Ms in each bite, swap in mini M&Ms for regular-sized M&Ms.
    • Flavors - M&Ms come in all kinds of flavors these days. Add more variety to the cookies using peanut, caramel, or peanut butter M&Ms.

    FAQs

Why do M&Ms not melt in cookies?

The hard candy shell on the outside of the M&M keeps the chocolate from melting. During the baking process, the shell may crack slightly, but it will keep the chocolate inside.

Why are my M&M cookies flat?

If the cookies are coming out very flat, chances are the butter was overmixed. Use room temperature butter and whip it until it is light and fluffy about 2-3 minutes.

Can I use other candies in these cookies?

Yes, other candies like sprinkles or chocolate chips will be a great addition to these cookies.
